- Scourge:
The Once and Future Threat of Smallpox by Jonathan B. Tucker, hardcover,
$18.20. I think the title says it all...a complete review of small pox through
the ages and possibly into the future as a bioweapon.
- Jane's
Chem-Bio Handbook by Frederick R. Sidell, $29.25. The professional standard
since 1998. Written by the top experts in the field and used by more Federal,
state and local law enforcement, fire, and emergency responders than any other
book of its kind.
- Biohazard: The Chilling True Story of the Largest Covert Biological Weapon
Program in the World--Told from Inside by the Man Who Ran It by Ken Alibek,
$11.16. Written by a scientist in the former Soviet Union's Bioweapons program
who has since defected to the United States, he tells of loading anthrax spores
into the nose cone of an SS-18 missile. Biohazard shows not only how disease
can become a deliberate tool of war, but that it almost did.
- Saddam's
Bombmaker: The Terrifying Inside Story of the Iraqi Nuclear and Biological
Weapons Agenda by Khidr Abd Al-Abbas Hamzah, Jeff Stein (Collaborator),
Khidhir Hamza, $18.20. If you have any doubts that Saddam is pursuing a nuclear
option, this book will shatter them. Written by the man who helped design
Saddam's nuclear bomb.
- Plague
Wars : A True Story of Biological Warfare by Tom Mangold, Jeff Goldberg,
Goldberg Mangold List Price, $19.56. Covers the historichal and present efforts
by countries like Russia, South Africa, Iraq and North Korea to develop biological
weapons. Also covers what various civilian and military organizations to combat
the threat. Very thorough.
- Nuclear War Survival Skills : Updated and Expanded 1987 Edition by Cresson
H. Kearny List Price: $19.50. One of the most authoritative works on how to
prepare for and survive a nuclear war. This was one of the first books on
survival Captain Dave ever read. It includes extensive details on constructing
fallout shelters and blast shelters, as well as plans for a radiation detection
device. Also provides information on radiation poisoning and exposure. Reading
this book will convince you that you can survive nuclear war!
- Life After Doomsday : A Survivalist Guide to Nuclear War and Other Major Disasters by Bruce D. Clayton, $20.96. A classic guide on how to prepare for and survive nuclear war and other disasters. Includes some information from
the above "Nuclear War Survival Skills."
Survival, Retreat and Self-sufficiency
- Carla
Emory's Encyclopedia of Country Living, $19.56. A definitive classic
on food, gardening, and self-sufficient living and a complete resource for
living off the land. More than 800 pages of collected wisdom from country
maven, Carla Emery--how to cultivate a garden, buy land, bake bread, raise
farm animals, make sausage, milk a goat, grow herbs, churn butter, catch
a pig, make soap, work with bees, etc., etc.
- Where
There is No Doctor. By Werner. Hesperian Foundation 1992 $17. If you
buy no other medical book, you must have this one. This is the must-have
of survival medicine; it WILL save lives.
- Where
There is No Dentist. By Dickson. Hesperian Foundation 1983, $12. The
only book of its kind. Very good. Dental care is a very underestimated survival
problem.
- Back
to Basics : How to Learn and Enjoy Traditional American Skills; $21.00:
The title says it all, conveyed as only Reader's Digest can. Read the reviews
at Amazon.com for more information on this excellent guide to recovering
the skills and simple pleasures of our forefathers, from buying land and
building on it to traditional crafts and homesteading skills.

when we were preparing to survive nuclear attack or government intervention.
