Captain Dave's Survival Center

Lesson 9:
Recognize that the biggest danger once the disaster has passed may be from your fellow man

In the aftermath of a disaster, chaos has a free hand. Criminals and evil people will run amok. The veneer of civilization is thin in the best of times, and disasters and the subsequent lack of authority wipe it away to reveal the animal nature of these lower humans who are held partly in check during normal times by law enforcement.

With Hurricane Katrina, looting started the day after the storm. We saw TV and newspaper coverage of people stealing large screen TVs from electronics stores, robbing liquor stores and looting drug and clothing stores. There we also tales of bands of roving thugs who searched private homes looking for jewelry and anything else of value.

This behavior is not limited to hurricanes. Any time law enforcement authorities abandon their posts or refuse to respond to an emergency because it is a dangerous situation looting and often arson break out. We saw this in the Rodney King riots and other examples of civil unrest.

Firearms can be a great deterrent when law enforcement is unable to respond

This is why every serious survivalist should have a gun, or preferably three: A pistol for concealed carry, a shotgun for close-in defense of house and home, and an assault rifle to counter the superior numbers and strength of a gang of thugs.

With so many easy pickings, smart criminals will avoid the house or business with the spray painted” You loot, we’ll shoot” sign and the assault-rifle toting owner.

Captain Dave’s talks further about the use of firearms for survival and personal safety elsewhere on the site, but he wants to leave you with this thought: Firearms are often useful tools in an emergency, but their mere presence accomplishes nothing without a trained, competent operator. So if you buy a gun, plan to spend at last as much on training and practice ammunition.
